Driving for Kids 2017 - The Route

Day One, Saturday September 24th:

Depart from the Hagerty office in Golden at 10:00 after a continental breakfast and a driver orientation meeting and take Highway 6 up through Clear Creek to Hidden Valley then a short stint on I-70 turning off on US 40 over Berthoud pass and on to Granby for lunch. After a delightful lunch break, we drive west on US 40 through Byers Canyon to Kremmling and a rest stop, then turn onto CO 134 over Gore Pass and then along the Colorado River to the high point of the day; a visit to the Roundup River Ranch and to meet the kids there. After our visit we proceed west on I-70 through the gorgeous Glenwood Canyon to our dinner and overnight lodging in Glenwood Springs, CO.

Day Two, Sunday September 25th:

Depart about 9:30 on CO 82 through Glenwood Springs to Carbondale and turn southwest on CO 133 past Redstone over McClure pass and down through Hotchkiss to lunch in Crawford where we have found a very special place. After lunch we will take CO 92 along the north rim of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison on what may be the best sports car road in Colorado and the most scenic as well. Turning east on US 50 we head past the Blue Mesa Reservoir’s sparkling water to a museum visit and our dinner and overnight lodging in Gunnison, CO.

Day Three, Monday September 26th:

Depart about 9:30 on US 50 over Monarch Pass, to our rest stop at Poncha Springs, then continue on US 50 through Salida and Texas Creek to CO 9 north to the best county roads you’ve ever seen through Teller county. These roads may be even more fun though less dramatic than CO 92, and they take us to via US 24 our lunch stop and awards presentation in Divide, CO. After lunch, we head east on US 24 to Woodland Park then up CO 67 through Deckers, Pine Junction and east on US 285 back to Denver. That will finish the inaugural Driving for Kids British Reliability Run. See you next year!
